Heatwave Plan 2025: Protect yourself from heatwaves

Publication

03 July 2025

Summer heatwaves pose a major health risk, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. In response to the current heatwave, the Department of Health has introduced the Heatwave Plan, an initiative designed to protect at-risk groups during periods of extreme heat.

Protective measures and registration with the Heatwave Plan

The Heatwave Plan aims to support elderly, vulnerable and isolated people through welfare visits and assistance with staying hydrated, in collaboration with the Red Cross and Copas. These visits are triggered when temperatures reach high levels. Anyone aged over 75, living alone in Luxembourg or with a person with limited independence, and not receiving any support from long-term care insurance, can register for the Heatwave Plan. Simply contact the Red Cross call centre on 27 55.

Practical tips for staying cool

It is essential to follow a few tips to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the heat:

  • Drink at least 1.5 litres of water a day.
  • Spend several hours a day in cool places or in the shade.
  • Limit your activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Eat foods with a high water content, such as salad, cucumber, tomatoes and melon.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
  • Keep the rooms in your home dark during the day by using curtains or shutters, and keep the windows closed.
  • Cool down with showers or partial baths.
  • Check in regularly with older people in your circle and make sure they are drinking enough.
